If you’re dealing with grief over the holidays, it is important to be kind to yourself and remember that grief is different for everyone. There are many different ways that people deal with emotions, and it is important to give yourself the space to grieve the way you need to. Generally, the holidays can be a tough time for many people. If you’re someone that has lost a loved one this can add another level of sadness and stress.
Here are some suggestions that may help you navigate the holidays during a time of grief.
- Give yourself grace, kindness & compassion. Remind yourself that you are doing the best that you can.
- Let go of the need to make things perfect.
- It’s okay to skip get-togethers. You don’t have to do it all. Pace yourself.
- Be as involved as you can or want to be. It is okay to visit for 30 minutes and then leave. If you are enjoying yourself you can choose to stay longer.
- What’s meaningful for you? For example, lighting a candle for your loved one may give you comfort during a holiday meal. Is there a ritual or tradition that you may want to begin?
- Be flexible. Grief is messy and it’s okay if things don’t go as planned.
- Tell people what you need (they might genuinely not know). For example, ask to go for a for a walk together.
- Recognize that some things are out of your control.
- There is no right or wrong way to grieve. Grief is as unique as you are.
- Reach out for a therapy session if you need.
